Unstructured Exercise May Be Making You Fat! Part 2

By Lee Johnstone, Personal Trainer and weight loss expert. Co-creator of ‘The Fittime 12 Week Challenge’

In the first part of ‘Unstructured exercise may be making you fat!’ I touched on the fact that unstructured exercise and diet may go hand in hand when it comes to gaining weight.

In this part, I would like to concentrate on another reason why the exercise you are doing may be making you fat.

In my opinion, there are way too many people giving unqualified advice when it comes to fitness, weight loss and more specifically, fat loss. You wouldn’t imagine listening to a motor mechanic instead of a doctor if there was something wrong with you. So it confuses me as to why so many people take fitness and weight loss advice from so many unqualified sources.

Most people I see in the gym are doing some form of exercise or another but they actually have no idea whether what they are doing is designed to get them the results they want.

I man asked me for some advice the other day, he said “Lee, my buddy and I joined a gym a year ago to lose some fat and get fit. We started doing this program a guy at work told me about but to tell you the truth, I actually feel like I’m not losing any weight at all! I have put on some muscle but I think that I am actually fatter than I was when I started!” I had a look at the program and said to him. “This program is designed to increase your strength, not lose weight. No wonder you feel like you are going backwards”

I explained to him that a program for strength is very different than one to lose fat. I asked him if he felt hungry after he finished his workout? “Yes, starving actually, I’ll usually head home and clean out the fridge!” I explained to him that his body knew exactly what it is doing even if he did not.

I told him, “In order to gain strength, which is what the program you are doing is designed to do, your body needs to eat a lot of food to replenish itself. In actual fact, your body is doing exactly what is should be doing with this type of program. In order to gain strength, you must gain muscle but in order to gain a lot of muscle you must eat a lot of food and if you don’t know which foods to specifically eat then you will also gain a large amount of fat!”

I saw him a few weeks later after I gave him some advice and he told me that he wished he started out doing what I showed him. He had no idea that he was wasting his time with a program that was not designed to give him the results that he actually wanted.

Is your workout routine giving you the results you want? If not, maybe it is time to change?
