Unstructured Exercise May Be Making You Fat! Part 1

By Lee Johnstone, Personal trainer and weight loss expert. Co-creator of ‘The Fittime 12 Week Challenge’

Any time we exert ourselves our body needs to refuel. Whether we go for a walk, a swim or workout in the gym, we need to be refueled. Just like a car, our bodies need to have their tanks topped up ready for the next trip.

I am sure you have noticed this especially if you are new to any form of exercise…workout and then you WILL get hungry!

There is nothing wrong with this, it is normal for the body to want to be replenished. But does the exercise you just performed warrant the types of food or the amount that you are eating? Like most people, you probably have no idea, right?

“Should I be eating more protein? How much Carbs? What vitamins and minerals do I need?” When you think about it, a simple after workout meal might be not helping your fat loss or fitness goals at all!

Imagine if you are eating the wrong things. Because you are extra hungry, you will naturally eat more of it. What if what you are eating is just making you more fat? Wouldn’t it be frustrating to think that all the hard work you have just put in while exercising may actually be making you fatter?

Some people are the opposite. They workout or jog or whatever exercise they do and then have no meal afterwards. What is the point of putting more calories in if I just put in so much effort to burn some off? Well this can be even worse than eating the wrong things in terms of gaining fat! Let me explain.

Our bodies are very clever things. They have some pretty amazing fail safes. Long ago, if we went an extended period without eating our bodies would slow down their metabolism in order to conserve fat stores, thus keeping us alive until we found more food. This was an imperative natural process because in the past, food sources were scarce and irregular.

Now days we can just head down to the store to get more food but our bodies still have this natural defence mechanism programmed in. So, after you workout, your body MUST be refueled. If you don’t give it fuel, it goes into preservation mode. It hangs onto fat stores and actually makes more fat next time it has access to food.

Having a well structured workout that is supported by a SPECIFIC healthy eating plan is the only way to get the results you want and deserve. After all, you’re the one putting in the hard work and could unwillingly be sabotaging yourself by eating the wrong things. When exercise and nutrition work together, results are inevitable, if they don’t work together, then you might be heading in the opposite direction?
